November Recap

We've had a very busy month!  However, I'm still struggling to believe December begins on Tuesday and that the year is almost over.  Aside from all of the craziness that 2020 inhabited, it sure did bring a lot of family time to me and for that I am grateful.

Here's a recap of what we've been up to since Halloween.

Avery sported a pumpkin outfit to church on November 1st.

We played outside in our comfiest t-shirts (designed by Grandma Chips).

We made good use of the bubbles we received from Halloween treats.

We built houses out of pencils.

And we made sure that PatPat Baby had a nice snack.

As you already know, we put up the tree and I had three very eager decorators.

On our way to drop off Noah and Avery prior to Michael's endocrinologist appointment, I caught a peak of him reading to his siblings.

I ordered a very appropriate 2020 commemorative ornament.

Noah and Avery had their well check-ups on the same day (we postponed both check-ups due to covid concerns earlier in the year but felt safe enough to do these appointments in mid-November after the doctor's office was very confident in their distancing measures).

When the boys had a sleepover at my parents' house, Aaron and I took Avery out for frozen yogurt.  We were both masked, but she enjoyed a special treat.

Noah sported a train conductor hat one weekend morning.

The kids made a cute hedgehog leaf craft.

We popped over to my mom's house on the weekend before Thanksgiving for the kids to help decorate her tree.

The kids served me calamari for breakfast last Sunday. :)

I got to have lots of extra cuddles this week during our Thanksgiving break.

One night for dinner we had chicken pot pie.

Avery and her 2 year old cousin enjoyed some outside time on Thanksgiving.

I made a cherry pie on Thanksgiving using canned cherries that my Grandma mailed to me since I can't find them in the stores here. :)

Avery enjoyed bicycle riding with Grampa Bill on Friday morning.

On Saturday evening, we went to my mother-in-law's house for her Thanksgiving meal and Avery was treated to a Frozen outfit from my sister-in-law!

I hope your November was just the way it needed to be for you, whether that was busy or calm.

Oh We Need a Little Christmas Right Now

Yes. I have done it. I have decorated my house (mostly) for Christmas.  I do still have some fall touches throughout but I have also pulled out most of our Christmas decorations and aim to enjoy them over the next month or so. I do not feel as though I dishonor Thanksgiving in doing this. I feel rather that I welcome in a sense of coziness & refuge which are my ultimate goals for my family to experience.

Here's a peek at what I have displayed so far.

Lyrical Sundays: Sparrows

I heard this song for the first time today as I was driving through town.  Some of the lyrics really spoke to me and I wanted to share them here with you too.  Last night, I kept having this recurring dream of a certain president-elect actually taking office even though it is unwarranted and achieved without merit.  I woke several times to attend to diabetes issues and every time I went back to sleep, I'd have the dream continue even though I prayed beforehand that God would grant me rest and not the discomfort of political turmoil and unrest.

However, I'm certain He allowed me to continue despairing in my sleep and feel the effects of the over-tiredness today so that I could lament to my mom at church this morning so she could remind me "Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin." (John 19:11).  You see, the president-elect would not be in office if it was not in God's plan.  This is in no way to say that this is the most honorable choice or even the most meritorious or godly.  This is to say that God is still in control and will remain in control to guard us and to protect us in the midst of political unrest in our country.

Therefore, when I heard the song "Sparrows" by Cory Asbury on the radio this afternoon, I was reminded again that God is good and He cares for us more than the rest of His creation and we shouldn't worry or fear, but instead should place our hope in Him.  I know the ending of the story.   Life on earth is a blip of time.  Life in Heaven is eternal.

(I'm placing in italics the lyrics that stuck out to me.)

Sparrows

Cory Asbury

The sparrow's not worried about tomorrow
Or the troubles to come
The lily's not thinking about the seasons
The drought or the flood
The tree that's planted by the water
Isn't phased by the fire

So why should I be?
'Cause you take good care of me
You take good care of me
You know what I need before I even ask a thing
And you hold me in your hands
With a kindness that never ends
I'm carried in your love, no matter what the future brings
Yeah, you take good care of me
The sun's not worried about the winter
'Cause soon it will pass

The light's not thinking about the darkness
Or the shadow it cast
A heart that's planted in forgiveness
Doesn't dwell in the past
So why should I be?
'Cause you take good care of me
You take good care of me
You know what I need before I even ask a thing
And you hold me in your hands
With a kindness that never ends
I'm carried in your love, no matter what the future brings
Yeah, you take good care of me
I know there must be more
But I can't get past your kindness
I know there's got to be more
But I can't get past your goodness
I know there must be more
But I can't get past your kindness
I know there's got to be more
But I can't get past your goodness
You take good care of me
You take good care of me
You know what I need before I even ask a thing
You hold me in your hands
With a kindness that never ends
I'm carried in your love, no matter what the future brings
Oh, you take good care of me

My Desk Nook

This year in order to make more room to spread out the lab tables in my classroom, I chose to put my teacher desk toward the back of the room instead of by the window. I've set it up pretty cozily and have added a mini fridge, a microwave, and a Keurig (our old one from home). I'm super happy with the way it turned out and it feels like a nice space set up well for grading and planning!

A couple of faux plants, a few family photos, lots of hand-drawn pictures, and some special knick knacks and this is truly a place where I can spend 8 hours each day!

Makeup Routine With A Mask

These days since we're all wearing a mask when we leave our homes, I've switched up my makeup routine in order not to over stress my skin.  Every day that I'm in the classroom, I have to wear a mask when entering & exiting the building, walking the halls, and anytime I'm within 6 feet of others. So basically all day unless I'm in my room alone or if I'm more than 6 feet when lecturing during a lesson.  At church on Sundays, I do not have to mask since our building is so large & since we don't have many people attending right now. Therefore on Sundays I usually apply more makeup than I do during weekdays.

Anytime that I'll be wearing a mask at all, I do not apply makeup on my cheeks or chin. I swipe a very minimal amount of mineral powder foundation & bronzer to my forehead and I do my eye routine the way I described in my post from October. Sometimes, I'll also apply some of the lightest eye shadow shade (the one I use at the base) to my discolored spot on my right cheek (leftover from my first pregnancy).  I'll also apply a lip stain (I use this instead of a lip stick because it doesn't rub off inside the mask). My favorite is Forever Peach lip & cheek stain by Jane Iredale. This makeup line is clean, so I feel comfortable using it. You can find this lip stain on the brand's website and also on Amazon. I'm using a trial size but I'll be buying the regular size later this month when I'm hoping it goes on sale. I also always clean off my face with a makeup removing face wipe. My favorite right now is Burt's Bees in the grapefruit scent.

On Sundays, I do a fuller make up routine that includes applying the mineral foundation powder all over my face and following it with mineral bronzer powder with an angled brush & dusting my cheeks with mineral powder blush in a peach shade using a kabuki brush. I'm using the Savvy Minerals makeup until I run out and then I'll find some other mineral makeup from a more reasonably priced brand in a drugstore.

I always keep my hair back from my face. This helps keep off excess oil from my hair from touching my face. I switch between pulling my hair in a bun, pinning it back with clips or Bobby pins or using a hairband (I found a great set on Amazon). (I have this set too.) Another thing I do to combat excess oil and germs is to wash my mask everyday. My aunt sewed several cloth masks for my family & I wear a different one every single day. When I get home, I immediately put my daily mask into a lingerie laundry bag & wash it with the day's load of laundry. I keep clean masks in a gallon bag on top of my pie safe & I pick out one each day.

So that's that!  How are you combating the mask and skincare?

November Happenings

It's hard to believe November is almost halfway over already!  This month has been very busy so far.  We began November three days after a major wind storm blew through our area from Hurricane Zeta.  It knocked out power for several thousand people in our state.  We only lost power briefly a few times during the storm around 1:00am (so I was awake and battling our house alarm system because the code box kept chirping since it didn't realize what time it was and it would reset every time the power went out!).  We had some wind damage and some slight roof damage that caused some rain water to leak into our home.  We'll call a roofer out soon to take a peek.  However, our damage was so much less than what it could have been and we're very thankful that no trees fell on our house, etc.

My dishwasher's start button was fried during the storm, so I haven't had a dishwasher since October 29th.  My new dishwasher's name is Reba and she's a hard worker. :)  I'm super grateful to be married to an electrician who can figure things out and he has narrowed the problem to the circuit board and we'll be ordering a new part soon.  Whether or not it will officially fix the problem, we are unsure but it was a better use of our money to try to repair it first before buying a new dishwasher right before the holidays.

At school we ended the first nine weeks on Monday November 9th, so I scrambled around during the first week of November to solidify grades and to complete the make-up assignments so many students needed since lots of students were without power for some of that first week of November.  In the end, though, I got it done and am glad to be in the second nine weeks.  This section of the school year moves quickly because of all of the holidays and breaks.  This nine weeks technically won't end until January 29th, but once I'm in the spring semester, I feel like it's a downhill ride to summertime so that makes me happy.

The boys have done well in being virtual students this year.  We had the option to send them back to school for the second nine weeks or we had to choose to keep them virtual until the second nine weeks is over. We opted to keep them virtual since flu season is starting to pick-up around here and I didn't want to expose them to flu and covid in the school setting.

They are both excelling academically and I think they truly enjoy the extra time they get to spend with their grandma during the day while Aaron and I are at work.  Noah's teacher is pregnant and will be leaving in the spring semester, so we knew he'd have to transition to a new teacher at some point.  The school decided to go ahead and switch his original teacher back to in-person teaching and bring in the kindergarten virtual teacher to teach both virtual kindergarten and virtual first grade.  So his new teacher took over last week for the virtual first grade class and I think the transition went smoothly.  Noah's original teacher worked alongside the new teacher to show her exactly how the students submitted assignments and what lessons they were currently working on, etc.  I'm so very thankful that she took these extra steps because it made the transition seamless.  Michael's teacher has been the virtual third grade and virtual fourth grade teacher since the beginning of the school year so she's already used to juggling two class loads at the same time.  He's continued to do well and is even working on cursive writing!

At my school, every teacher is both a traditional (in-person) teacher and a virtual teacher.  So whenever I have students transition to traditional learning, they come in my class as an in-person student and they don't have to undergo a teacher transition.  At times it feels like extra work to load and create lesson plans online and tweak those plans for in-class learning, but it's really not so bad in the end.

We have one full week of school coming up, then we'll begin our Thanksgiving break by having Monday and Tuesday as county-wide "eLearning Days" which is code for "everyone will be virtual students on those days."  It's nice for me because I get to be home on those days (just checking email every few minutes and answering any questions that students ask during the 7:45am-3:00pm time frame).  It's also nice for my boys because they don't really know the difference between a regular day of school and an "eLearning Day" since all of their schoolwork is online anyway.

On Thanksgiving Day, my parents will host the meal in the late afternoon once my mom gets off of work.  I'm super excited because my older brother and his family are coming into town and my younger brother is off of work so we all get to be together.  My dad and I will handle the bulk of the cooking so that my mom doesn't have to do much of anything once she gets off.  Aaron will fry a turkey breast and my dad will roast a whole turkey with stuffing.  I plan to make a green bean casserole, a sweet potato casserole, bake rolls, and a couple of pies (cherry and crustless pumpkin).  My sister-in-law or me or my dad will assemble mashed potatoes and a seven layer salad.  Thanksgiving is certainly one of my favorite holidays mainly because of all of the family time.

The weekend following Thanksgiving, we'll have a meal at my mother-in-law's house when my brother-in-law comes into town with his family.  I'm not sure what I'll be making for that but I imagine it'll be a green bean casserole and maybe a pie as well.

I had my follow-up at my doctor's office on Wednesday.  Although my a1c went down, I'm still technically considered a Type 2 diabetic but able to be controlled by diet.  I would say exercise as well, but I've slacked off on that regard so I won't say that my medical improvements are due to something if I'm not actually doing that something. I do plan to incorporate exercise again though.  The doctor didn't write in my chart that I have Type 2 because she says with the labelling comes a change in life insurance options, and she won't prescribe a medicine because I've shown that I'm able to adjust my eating habits to accompany this new lifestyle demand.  As a side note though: I will not change much on how I eat at Thanksgiving.  I don't overstuff myself anyway, and I'm going to allow myself to participate in the day's eatings and not feel sanctioned off.

This was a big update and I'll write more soon about Michael's recent endocrinology appointment and Noah & Avery's well check-ups!

Until Next Time,

Much Love, Reba
